15 simple exercises to increase your self-awareness15 simple exercises to increase your self-awarenessSelf-awareness is the first step for personalgrowth. To know ourselves allows us to take the reins of our life. Self-awareness helps you binnenbinnensee yourself clearly - itilluminates your blind spotsso you can live mora intentionally rather than on autopilot.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraMost of us are more unaware than aware. Thats why practicing self-awareness reveals whatwe dont know we dont knowabout ourselves. Self-awareness is a never-ending journey - even for those who know themselves well.Increased self-awareness can turn you into a better leader - both personally and professionally. Self-aware persons make better decisions, are more creative andcollaborative.Enjoy these self-awareness exercises. Give them a try and see which work for you. Know yourself lead yours elf.1. Who are you? This is a simple, yet profound, exercise. It works better when you practice it with someone else, but you can do it on your own too.You have to answer one question Who are you? - over and over. The exercise is pretty straightforward one person asks Who are You? and the other responds whatever comes to mind. The first person keeps asking Who are you? right after each answer. This goes on for two minutes, and then people switch roles the person who responded now gets to ask Who are you?It feels silly and simple, but fruchtwein people struggle as they have to continue answering who they are. Initially, people share obvious things - their names, jobs, relationships, hobbies, etc. But, as the exercise progresses, it becomes harder and harder. Thats precisely the point - to peel the multiple layers of our identity.Reflect on the experience. Do you tend to associate your identity to your profession or relationship status? Did any of your responses surprise you? What hav e you discovered about yourself? Did the exercise remind you of some forgotten or hidden areas of who you are?We contain multitudes, as Walt Whitman wrote. Understanding thatyour identity is fluid and complexis essential to improve your self-awareness.2. Monitor your inner voiceThe words we use every day have a profound impact - language shapes our relationship with people, things, and ourselves.Talking to oneself is one the most natural, yet undervalued, skills we have. It stimulates self-reflection, increases motivation, and connect us with our emotions.Researchby Canadian professor Alain Morin shows theres a high correlation between talking to oneself more frequently and a higher self-awareness and self-evaluation.The quality of your inner speech is critical - the more positive your words, the better. Pay attention to your inner voice.Would you allow anyone to speak to you the way you talk to yourself?Pay attention to the way you respond to both your successes and failures. You r inner voice creates feedback-loops - you can turn them into a negative or positive experience. The way you talk to yourself is the way you love yourself. Choose your words carefully.Words like I cant, I should, or I have to limit our potential by creating a negative attitude - either we dont trust in our potential, or we are addressing a task as a burden. Check out the following post to learn how to reframe your negative inner-dialogue into a positive one.3. Your superpower and kryptoniteAccepting our whole self - flaws included - is vital for self-appreciation.The purpose of this exercise is to reconnect with both your negative and positive sides and understand that neither is good or bad - howwe use them can help or harm us.Write down whats your Superpower and whats your Kryptonite - just one in each case.Let me share mine as an example. My Superpower is my ability to come up with an insight or idea that connect things that seem unrelated. My Kryptonite is being impatient - I get anxious when people take too much time to respond or do something.Neither is good or bad. If I use my impatience wisely, I can drive people into action. However, if Im always impatient, then Ill drive everyone crazy. saatkorn with my Superpower - it can harm me if I overplay it.I suggest that you start with one first, and then build a full list of all your Kryptonite and Superpowers.Reflect on what they say about you? How do you usually use them? How can you adjust your Superpower or Kryptonite, so they help you, bedrngnis hurt you?4. Write morning pagesThis exercise comes from the bookAn Artists Way.There are many iterations out there.Writing Morning Pages is very useful to produce insights, calm anxieties, and resolve problems. As soon as you wake up, grab a piece of paper and write everything that comes to mind. Dont filter anything - you want to declutter your mind. The recommendation is to compose three pages of stream-of-consciousness writing. Some people do more. Ot hers set a time limit - 15 to 20 minutes. Doing it in the morning is ideal. You want to let everything out before your mind gets busy and starts filtering things.Writing Morning Pages can help you unblock emotions, discover ideas that were at an unconscious level, or identify areas for development. When you let your words flow, without any rational filter, you set your creativity free.Morning Pages are private you dont need to filter your words. Some people use them as a warm-up and then destroy them without checking what they wrote. Others use them as a source of inspiration or self-reflection. See what works for you. This exercise is an unfiltered version of journaling - it will help you know yourself better and become more appreciative too.5. Perception/ realityThe purpose of this exercise is to compare your self-image with what others think of you.List the top five words that describe who you are. Then ask ten people - a mix of friends, family and work colleagues - to provide their list (the five words that best describeyou). Its critical that people agree to be candid. I suggest they send their words via email or text versus doing it in person. Compare their responses to your own list. What are the similarities? What are the differences? What surprised you about peoples feedback? Why?How do opinions from family and co-workers differ from each other? What does that tell you about how you behave in different environments?6. The three whysThis technique was initially developed bySakichi Toyodaand was used by Toyota to evolution its manufacturing approach. It explores the cause-and-effect relationships underlying a particular problem. By repeating the question Why? you dig deeper into the root cause. This exercise is a shorter version - you get to ask Why? three times only.Ricardo Semler, a champion of employee-friendly and radical corporate democracy workplaces, suggests that we can gain greater wisdom by simply asking three Whys? in a row about everything w e are doing. He says that for the first Why? you always have a good answer for. The second Why? becomes more difficult to answer. The third one makes you realize that, most probably, you dont know what you are doing. You can apply this when you are about to make a decision, or you are feeling confused and dont know whats going on. Or to answer any question in your life. Or to come up with new ideas or solutions.Semler says that by asking Why? three times, you get more clarity about who you are and why you are here.7. Record yourABCsAlbert Elliss ABC Model is a significant part of his rational-emotive behavior therapy (REBT) - a precursor to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).The basic idea behind the ABC model is thatexternal events(A) do bedrngnis cause emotions , but our beliefs do (B).Though this exercise is very effective for dealing with an adverse event, you can use it in normal situations too. It will help you reflect on how you react to events so you can do better next time.A ctivating eventthat triggers your inner dialogueBeliefsyou formed after the eventConsequencesor how you feelThis formula will help you understand your response to stressful situations. People react differently to similar events - the ABC model increases your awareness. The idea is to learn how to turn automatic negative thoughts into positive ones.Imagine theres a traffic jam, and you are running late to work. You may become anxious imagining that you wont make it on time for a meeting with your boss. This might cause you to start shouting at others or blowing your horn. Alternatively, you might choose to relax and focus on what you can control - you might call and inform your boss you wont make it on time or that youll take the meeting from your phone. The ABC model is a very effective way to reflect on our behaviors and adjust how we react - especially to events we cannot control.8. Your best and worst selfThe purpose of this exercise is to help you acknowledge what drives you ( or not) by getting input from other people. They just have to answer two questionsWhen did you see me the most excited? When did you see me the most frustrated? Its important that people choose one event per question. And that they provide a Why?Invite people that know you really well - either personally or professionally. Get five to six answers at least. Compare findings and reflect on what motivates you and what gets you stuck. What surprised you about peoples feedback? Why?Is there any particular theme, either in what frustrated or excited you?Are there any specific tasks, topics, people, or moments associated with frustrating or exciting moments?9. Write your own obituaryThe purpose of this exercise is to focus your life on what really matters to you. To live the way you want to be remembered. As Mahatma Gandhi said, Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever. An obituary usually captures our best self - who we were, what we did, and what we achieve d. Here you will write it while you are alive, rather than someone else doing it for you. Focusing on how you want to be remembered, will clarify whats important to you.I use this exercise in some of ourchange leadership workshops. Writing ones obituary is not easy - people freak out a little initially. Thinking about ones death is moving. However, being reminded that our lives dont last forever, builds a sense of urgency - it provides clarity and focus.Go on. Write your own obituary. Take the exercise seriously, not yourself. If you are humorous, let your epitaph be fun too. Use the following template.Start by writing your namethe way youd like it to look on your tombstone. You can add a nickname too.In one line, how did you make the world a better place?Be concise. The more focused, the more honest youll be with yourself.Write down how people will remember you.Avoid pompous language. Stick to the tone and words that regular people would use - especially those who know you well. Thewhyis essential (once again, you dont need the full laundry list). This part requires more introspection.Look yourself into the mirror and answer without filtering Who was the real you? Not your masks or titles or roles. What was your essence? What made you unique?Saying yes is easy. What we say no to defines who we really are. Which was in your case? What were the temptations, distractions, or possibilities that you said no to because they would derail you from achieving your goals?Who will miss you the most? This seems easy, but its not. The answer is not about what you wish, but trying to understand who willreallymiss you. A lot of people will do for sure. But who were those people to whom you meant something special? Once again, avoid judging yourself. Being honest is what makes this exercise meaningful. Now its time to be creative. The previous steps provided the background now its time to bring it your epitaph to life. Write down in one or two paragraphs the words that you woul d love someone to say about you once youve departed. This is the most critical part of the exercise. Connect with your true essence, not your vanity.Download a high res copy of the template here.10. Ask for Feedback, RegularlyThere are two types of self-awareness internal and external. The first one is how well you know yourself the latter is about knowing how others see you.We all have blind spots that affect our behaviors - feedback is crucial for us to see our unknown unknowns. Asking for regularconstructive feedbackhelps fight self-deceit. Get input from different sources, not just your best friends or partner.Pay attention dont filter what you hear. We tend to accept feedback that is aligned with our view of self and reject feedback that doesnt match our view of reality. Writing down what people tell you - without judging what you hear - can help you overcome this bias. The moreinteresting the questionsyou ask, the more productive the feedback. Ive always loved the What shoul d I start/continue/ stop doing? approach - its action-driven. Effective feedback should focus on your behavior, not on who you are or your beliefs.Once again, find people that can provide an objective, constructive, and rich view. Feedback is like sex. Everyone does it, butfew do it well.11. Get an accountability partnerWe cannot improve our behaviors on our own - the support of like-minded people helps us overcome barriers and limiting beliefs. Getting an Accountability Partner increases your chances of achieving your goals or developing new habits. When you commit your goals to someone, your probability raises to 65%. If you create a specific accountability appointment with a person, the odds increase to 95%.Marshall Goldsmith, the founder of the namesake coaching firm, is a perfect example of the power of having an accountability partner.Every night, a friend calls him to ask him 22 questions. This process helps Goldsmith reflect if hes honest with himself, if he is doing his be st, and identifying areas for personal growth. You dont have to go that extreme. But, the example is clear evidence that even self-aware people, like a longtime life coach, know that they must continually build self-awareness.An accountability partner agreement is the foundation of a reciprocal relationshipeach member coaches and helps the other achieve professional or personal success. The partnership is established by an agreement that defines how the relationship would work.Start by committing to one behavior you want to change focusing is critical.Choose one behavior you want to change/ improve.Establish clear metrics to measure progress.Define rules of engagement. What coaching style do you expect from your partner? Do you want your partner just to listen or also to challenge you? Do you expect feedback in the form of advice, tips or questions? Clarify whats confidential. What other things should your partner know about you or the behavior you want to change?Establish regular tou ch points. Both partners need to agree on the frequency, date, duration, etc. Also, will you be meeting in person or online?Download your copy of the Accountability Partner agreement12. The JohariWindowThis tool is ideal for increasing self-awareness. It focuses on understanding whats visible (or not) to us and others. Our blind spots lie at the intersection of howweperceive ourselves and howothersperceive us.The Johari Windowwas developed by Psychologists Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham to help us become more self-aware.I use it regularly when working with organizations to increase both self andteam awareness.ARENATraits and behaviors that both yourself and others are aware of. It includes anything about yourself that you are willing to share. This area drives clarity and builds trust.MASKAspects about yourself that you are aware of but might not want others to know. It can also include traits that you are not sharing with others without you being aware of. What you show to others is a mask that hides your authentic selfas I wrote here.BLIND SPOTSWhat others perceive, but you dont. Important to note not valuing your strengths can also be a blind spot. Feedback from others can make you more aware of your negative traits but also of the positive ones you are not appreciating.UNCONSCIOUSWhats unknown to both you and anyone else.Though this matrix has four quadrants, the size of each is not necessarily equal. Each window pane will vary depending onHow much you share with other peopleHow well others (try to) know youHow well you know yourselfYou can expand your Arena area byDisclosing more about yourself, thus reducing the Mask areaUncovering more about your Unconscious areaBecoming aware of your Blind areaThe place to start in the Johari window is in the open area. Make some notes about yourself.Involve other people and ask for feedback about yourself - ask each person to provide five phrases to describe you. Be prepared to seriously consider the feedback you get. T hat doesnt mean that you have to do everything that people tell you.13. The wheel of lifeThis tool is straightforward to use and increases self-awareness by assessing the key areas in your life. Dont confuse it with the Buddhists Wheel of Life. The Wheel of Life has eight categories Career, Money, Health, Friends Family, Significant Other, Personal Growth, Fun Recreation, and Physical Environment. You can replace the names or categories to adapt it to your reality.Use a 110 scale to assess each area, where 1 is closest to the center of the circle and 10 is at the edge of it - the highest level of satisfaction. You can also apply colors to highlight each area. Put yourself in a quiet place and remove all distractions. This exercise can take you between 15 to 30 minutes. Dont rush it. And be honest with yourself.CareerIs your career where you want it to be by now? Are you satisfied with what you are doing? Reflect on job satisfaction versus career satisfaction.MoneyAre you earning e nough income to satisfy your current needs? Do you have a clear plan for the future? Are you saving money or suffering from high-debt stress?HealthHow physically fit are you? Are you satisfied with your eating habits? How would you rate your physical activity?Friends FamilyDo you have people that you can count on? Do you have a support network? Do the people around you help you grow?Significant OtherDo you feel loved, understood, and respected? Do you have a partner that satisfies you? How strong is your relationship?Personal GrowthDo you have a clear purpose in life? What about your spiritual life? What are your goals and priorities? Are you satisfied with your personal development? Do you spend enough time to learn, reflect, and improve your knowledge and behaviors?Physical EnvironmentDoes the place you live in satisfy you? Do you take care of your environment to help you succeed? Do you have a safe space for reflection or relaxation? Are you satisfied with the places you usually visit? The purpose of scoring is not to feel overly confident or sad about how each area performs, but to understand if you areliving a well-balanced life.Reflect. Are you putting too much energy or time into specific areas? Are others being neglected or postponed? Ask the 3 Whys?Set up goals for improvement - 1 month, 3 months and 6 months. Rerun the assessment and monitor your progress. Self-awareness is not just about understanding who you are and how you live, but also to track improvements.14. Name your emotionsWe are continually experiencing emotions. Sometimes, we dont pay attention to what we feel. Others, we overreact without realizing whats triggering our behavior. This exercise will help you familiarize with your feelings. Practice labeling your emotions as they happen. Close your eyes and focus on your emotions. Name them without passing judgment. Feeling upset is not the same as being angry, sad, or frustrated. Most of the times, we mix our emotions. Check this post to learn to discriminate different feelings.Becoming more aware of how you feel can help you uncover what affects your mood but, most importantly, to avoid overreacting because you are not fully aware of what you are feeling. The more you get to know your feelings, the less they willcloud your judgment.15. Reflect on past decisionsSelf-awareness also feeds from our past actions. Learn to reflect on the actual impact of your decisions. Reflect on what you can do differently next time.As Peter Drucker wrote, Whenever you make a decision or take a key decision, write down what you expect will happen. Nine or 12 months later, compare the results with what you expected. He called this self-reflection processfeedback analysisand believed it was the only way to discover our strengths. The Jesuits, a strict religious order within the Catholic Church, practice something similar. Whenever they are about to make an important decision, they write down what they expect will happen and how they arrived at a conclusion. Nine months later, they compare the actual results with their expectations.Reflecting on past decisions will help youBecome more aware of how you make decisionsRealize what worked and what didntNotice your usual biasesImprove your decision-making processFailing smartrequires improving your perspective - learn from present mistakes, but also to observe things through times. Narcissistic ignorance and a more productive you
Narcissistic ignorance and a mora productive youNarcissistic ignorance and a more productive youYou might have observed a common feature of the new age activist to be a potent lack of charisma. Ready-made phrases half-remembered, delivered with the aimless gusto of a squirrel with vertigo.Passionate speeches presented clumsily. The best of them are sloppy regurgitations and the worst of them are unintelligible.Lately, it seems were encouraged to supplant acknowledgment of our shortcomings with distractions and oversimplifications. Freedom of expression has been redefined as a celebration of ignorance one that is governed by an enmity toward expertise. Working in tandem with this is the societal effect of the degradation of language Orwell warned us about more than 70 years ago.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreA vulgar misunderstanding of terms like democracy has curbed forward t hought and dispelled the notion of appraising opinions. The youthful impulse to hold mavens to the fire isnt itself a problem. A problem only arises when the impulse ceases to be attended by research and self-awareness. Being informed is a long painful, humbling process.Authority is not a virtue earned lightly.Unskilled and unawareI recently wrote about the pluralistic ignorance of imposter syndrome-the idea that everyone feels alone in their self-doubt. This collective lack of confidence is certainly a hindrance to a productive labor system but the other end of the cognitive spectrum is just as detrimental. This other end was officially classified in response to the comical misfortune of a man named Mcarthur Wheeler. In 1995, Wheeler robbed two banks in Pittsburgh- in broad daylight. As he exited the banks (both of them) he made a point to smile at surveillance cameras-without a mask. He did, however, have a coat of lemon juice on his face. When authorities caught him they showed hi m the security footage. Wheelers reaction was one of utter bemusement.Given that lemon juice is sometimes used as an ingredient when creating invisible ink it stands to reason that bathing ones face in the stuff would effectively conceal it from cameras. Wheeler wasnt under the influence of any substances nor was he clinically insane. This profound error of judgment alerted the interest of psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger. The two soon after conducted studies to explore the Illusion of superiority instanced by Wheeler- inspiring the label The Dunning Kruger effect. The Dunning Kruger effect refers to the unearned sense of mastery expressed by those of low ability a misunderstanding of aptitude energized by a lack of kusine level knowledge.Dunning and Kruger began inspecting the condition with a pool of undergraduate students. After presenting them with a series of cognitive tasks they would ask the students how well they thought they did. Those that scored the lowest cons istently overestimated how well they did by a significant margin. The effect doesnt just apply to academia. Similar experiments conducted at a gun range birthed the same results. Another study asked software engineers at two companies to evaluate their performance. 32% of the employees at one company and 42% of employees at the other company rated themselves in the top 5%.Its not merely a matter of overconfidence. Its a blind defiance of logic. The more incompetent you are, the more vulnerable you are to mistakes of self-perception.A Google-fueled, Wikipedia-based, blog-sodden collapse of any division between professionals and laymen, students and teachers, knowers and wonderers in other words, between those of any achievement in an area and those with none at all.Tom Nichols detailed a potential cause pretty powerfully in his book back in 2017.The Death Of Expertise describes the mass rejection of science and rationality. Nichols correctly suggests that the right we all have to spe ech has blunted our ability to properly assess its value. In some instances, some peoples import is worth more than others. Thats an important and obvious distinction to make.Doctors, whatever their errors, seem to do better with most illnesses than faith healers or your Aunt Ginny and her special chicken gut poultice. To reject the notion of expertise, and to replace it with a sanctimonious insistence that every person has a right to his or her own opinion, is silly.Charitable.Our rabid antipathy toward experts partly owes itself to our collective masochism-particularly when it comes to progredienz. We have a long way to go in the fields of science and epistemology. I understand the tendency to focus on the lack ofs that is bred out of frustration, but weve made some considerable strides. Thats undeniable. It is objectively lucky to born in the year 2019.Every plane that doesnt crash, every person that doesnt die from this or from that is a testament to our trajectory and a plea to adhere to the counsel of those that have put in the work and time in their respective fields.A hesitance to request honest feedback, and a commitment to the idea that pundits dont exist, is heartening drab dialogue. On a selfish level, narcissistic ignorance has made many of us incredibly boring and unproductive. You cant concurrently harbor a fear of failure and a passion for enlightenment. Just like you cant have a proper shave without a mirror.MetacognitionIn closing, Id like to share some thoughts on thoughts i.e. the only thing keeping me from being a horrible writer is the awareness that Im, at best, a pretty bad one.The process of evaluating the extent of what you do and do not know falls under the umbrella of a term coined by a developmental psychologist named John Flavell, in 1976 metacognition, thinking about thinking. Its the cycle of scrutiny and surveillance that equips us with instruments of self-improvement. The idea that because information is so readily available exp ertise is just a free afternoon away is both quixotic and cynical. Reading a Wikipedia article about existentialism with the expectation of becoming erudite is like eating an apple without a stomach and expecting the nutrients.Like Nichols states, intuitive knowledge is more complicated than memory retention. Lived experiences matter.Skepticism isnt itself the issue. In fact, true progress requires a healthy dose of it. Not on its own though. Pyrrhonism is a highly reactive property. Coupling it with deliberation, and a clear understanding of individual strengths and weaknesses, promotes it considerably. We have much more to learn from the failure of experts than we do from the critique of fools. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, acc ording to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Emulating Others on the Way to Business Success
Emulating Others on the Way to Business Success Im a huge believer in working long and hard. I dont believe in luck. If you work hard, opportunities will come yur way. Business is a numbers game. The more numbers (emails, phone calls, meetings, etc.) you commit to, the more doors will eventually open for you. Heres a brief reminder about how powerful committing to numbers can be It took me 10 months of cold calls, emails, and meetings, along with only being able to afford to eat a teaspoon of peanut butter for breakfast and drink $1 gas station coffee every day, before I got my breakthrough in real estate. This breakthrough enabled me to sell 22 properties in the span of only three months, and it kickstarted my success. I now run a million-dollar real estate business in Ohio. Remember to never give up, and always commit to the numbers.Copy the Right CatAnother success principle that I always follo w is to copy other successful entrepreneurs and what they do. Many entrepreneurs ask me how I got to where I am today without any formal education (I quit school when I was 14). My answer is always the same I asked people who were already where I wanted to be questions, and I studied and copied everything they did. Now, dont take this advice too far. Make sure to add your own personal touch and brand to whatever idea inspires you. Every post and video on my companys website has a calculated strategy behind it to better showcase our brand and to generate more hype and buzz about who we are and what we do. We are constantly being inspired by something or someone else.Emulate Experts in the FieldIt took years and years of talking with different experts from different fields, along with making thousands of minor adjustments, to achieve what we have.In the earliest days of my real estate investment journey, I was fortunate enough to be taken under the wing of a real estate entrepreneur wh o had grown his business into a $50 million powerhouse in Australia. To this day, my staff and I look to his companys every move from YouTube videos and social media updates to when they send out their weekly newsletters. I also give him a call once in a while to get pointers on certain things associated with projects we are working on.Although it might feel satisfying to do so, please remember to not feed your ego by comparing your achievements with that of tire kickers. Focus on being the best you can and look up to the best there is. They say that you become who youre with. Connect with people who are moving, shaking hands every day, and shooting for the stars. This woman was fired for having her period at work. Now shes suing
This woman was fired for having herbei period at work. Now shes suingThis woman was fired for having her period at work. Now shes suingA new workplace discrimination lawsuit is deciding whether or not women can be fired for menstruating on the job.Last month, Alisha Coleman filed a federal appeal to fight an earlier decision by a district court in Georgia that tossed out her lawsuit against her former employer, the Georgia-based Bobby Dodd Institute, in which she alleged that she was unlawfully fired for experiencing a sudden onset of her period at work, a pre-menopausal symptom that was out of her control.Coleman had worked for Bobby Dodd as a 911 call taker for nearly a decade when she got fired in April 2016. In the appeals brief that the American Civil Liberties Union filed on her behalf, Coleman said she had communicated her pre-menopausal condition to her employer, but the company was unsympathetic to her plight. Coleman said she was fired after she had two incidents of acciden tally leaking menstrual vernderbar in the office. The first time it happened on an office chair, Coleman received a disciplinary writeup and was told by management that she would be fired if she ever soiled another chair. The second time it happened on a carpet, Coleman said she cleaned the stain with bleach and disinfectant but still got dismissed.Coleman was told she was being terminated because she didnt practice high standards of personal hygiene and maintain a clean, neat appearance while on duty, according to the brief.Judges in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia ruled in June that the company had a right to fire Coleman for being unable to control the heavymenstruation and soiling herself and company property, because Coleman hadnt proven that a male colleague with a similar condition, such as incontinence, would have been treated differently, according to the ACLU brief. But to the ACLU who is representing Coleman in her federal appeal, the cause for d ismissal is an unreasonable, illegal policing of womens bodies.Federal law is supposed to protect women from being punished, harassed or fired because of their sex, and being fired for unexpectedly getting your period at work is the very essence of sex discrimination, Galen Sherwin, the Senior Staff Attorney at the Womens Rights Project of the ACLU, said in a statement. Under thePregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978,any kind of discrimination that is because of sex, including related medical conditions, is prohibited. In its defense, Bobby Dodd said that the company followed proper protocol and went the extra mile to avoid dismissal in this case, as we would for any of our employees.Menstruating workers are stigmatizedFor Coleman, her firing not only caused her to lose a job she said she loved, it also was a moment of public humiliation that spurred her into action. Every woman dreads getting period symptoms when theyre not expecting them, but I never thought I could be fired for it. Getting fired for an accidental period leak was humiliating. I dont want any woman to have to go through what I did, so Im fighting back, she said in a statement.Shes not alone in worrying about her period at work.Menstruation is an everyday yet intimate bodily occurrence that workers around the world are stigmatized for experiencing. In 2015, fertility app Clue found that 18% of women in the U.S. have missed work out of fear that someone might find out that they are having their period. In Thailand, Indonesia, and Singapore, the number of employees who have missed work due to period fears rises to more than 90%.Although certain countries like Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan have paid menstrual leave, the lengths that menstruating workers have to go through to get this leave demonstrate how menstruation is still a symbol of shame. In certain parts of Indonesia, for example, menstruating workers will forego their legal right to paid menstrual leave, rather than submit themselves to hu miliation of having to prove that theyre having their monthly cycle.Female employees already have their outer bodies - fromhair toweight andvoices- judged and policed in the workplace. If Colemans case fails, advocates say it will serve as proof that employees inner bodily functions are allowed to be policed by employers, too.

8 job interview mistakes smart people never make
8 job interview mistakes smart people never make8 job interview mistakes smart people never makeWe all know the first-date-like jitters that go with a job interview the mora excited you are for the opportunity, the more anxiety you might experience before showing up. But as you prepare to meet your potential new boss and some potential new co-workers, its also important to remember what face youre presenting to menschlich resources. Its their job to look out for indicators that youre bedrngnis the right candidate for the gig, and performing at your tip-top shape is essential to success. And often, human resources workers dont have the sentimental attachments or industry networks that managers might have, so theyre harder to impress.pullquoteGazing eye-to-eye helps the HR manager know that you see eye-to-eye./pullquoteOr are they?HR managers want to see that youre confident in yourself, your skills, and your suitability for the company and role. If you dont believe you can do the job and fit in with the company, why should the HR manager believe it? asks geschftliches miteinander psychologist, career coach and content director, Kate Sullivan. So presenting yourself with a calm, confident demeanor is important, even if youre nervous as heck about the interview. Avoid these red flags so you will definitely get asked back for round two. Here are the surprising ways you may be hurting your own chances.1. You dont make eye contactWhen youre looking to hire a babysitter for your beloved babe or even a dog walker for your furry companion, would you select someone who didnt look you in the eye? It seems like a no-brainer, but when you throw in a helping of nerves, you might forget to maintain eye contact during an interview. Gazing eye-to-eye helps the HR manager know that you see eye-to-eye and that youre presenting yourself sincerely. If you look away instead of looking directly at the interviewer, this indicates that you are uncomfortable with the question and/or that you may not be truthful with your response, explains Amy Cooper Hakim, an expert on workplaces and industrial-organizational psychology. When youre tempted to dart your attention because youre doubting your response (or worrying if youre talking too long), slow down, breathe and keep looking straight ahead. This will illustrate your strength and maturity, instead of making you look fishy. 2. You arent confidentSullivan says that while you dont need to be a world-class public speaker, a successful professional does have the ability to pitch themselves effectively. Heres the thing if you arent able to sell yourself to your dream company, who is going to do it for you? No one. If you cant, the odds that youll be able to close a sale or make an important business presentation arent goodand thats not the kind of person fruchtwein HR managers want to hire, Sullivan says.Though you dont want to sound like youre reading off a script, consider practicing your personal elevator pitch who are you? Why are you awesome? Why should you, above anyone else, get this job?3. Youre overly enthusiasticSome folks clam up when their nerves get the best of them, while others become chatty and overcompensate. If your response to anxiety-laced experiences is to overcompensate with laughter, jokes and loud remarks, Hakim says to tone it down. If you are overly excited throughout the whole interview, then the interviewer may think that you are not being sincere or that you are putting on a show, she notes. Overcome this by smiling, yet not doing so in an exaggerated fashion. Show your enthusiasm for the position while still being professional.4. You dodge the tricky questionsYou can probably detail your past work experience without skipping a beat. Or, when asked your advice on a topic that you happen to have a plethora of experience with, you might be able to speak smartly and directly. But what about your greatest weakness? What your besties would say about you? Your biggest mistake o n the job? Theres a reason curveball questions are thrown into the job interview process, and your ability to answer them - without fumbling- illustrates a lot about your character. Adaptability is important because every job comes with challenges how will you respond when theres a monkey wrench thrown into your project plans?, Sullivan says. HR managers often try to ask quirky or seemingly random questions to see how well you can think on your feet and how you respond to the unexpected as a way to gauge what you might do in a high-pressure situation on the job.5. You dont ask any questionsIn any career book youll ever read, itll note how important it is to come armed with questions to an interview. And though you probably had a handful when you were trying to land that first gig post-college, now that youve been interviewing for years, you might forget this mandatory step. Dont. Every job is different, and if you show no curiosity, it suggests youre not paying attention. If you do not have any questions for the interviewer about the position, the company, or as a follow-up to questions asked, then the interviewer may think that you are not taking the interview seriously, Hakim says. Overcome this by writing down two questions before the interview. Pull them out to read at the end of the interview, if you realize that you have yet to ask any on your own.6. Youre not showing your personalityA big parte of job performance isnt set upon strategic goals, big praise or even compensation. Instead, much of what contributes to an employees success and productivity is how happy they are at work, day-in and day-out. And though Sullivan says culture might feel like a corporate buzzword these days, its still important and relevant. If everyone on the kollektiv is loud and boisterous, playing foosball after work and taking team trips to the skate park, a shy wallflower might not perform well, even if they have all the skills needed to do the job, she explains. Likewise, a quiet, studious team might not be the best environment for a high-energy person who thrives on constant excitement. Assessing culture fit can help both a team and an individual thrive.Thats why you have to be true to who you are and show your personality- not only to ensure that youre a right fit for the company, but to determine if the company is a right fit for you. If you know that the company has a startup vibe with plenty of laid-back perks, you might be tempted to present yourself differently to show that youd fit in. If youre not the type to hang out on a climbing wall on your lunch break, dont say that you are- admit that youd rather take a walk or, you know, just eat lunch. It does no one any favors for you to insist that a dog-friendly environment is just what youve always been looking for when, in fact, youre allergic to dogs, Sullivan says.7. Youre fidgetingWe all have ways we demonstrate were nervous, intentionally and unintentionally. A few ticks here and there are fi ne, but if youre overly fidgeting during your interview, the HR manager is going to notice- and fast. Cross your legs or ankles to keep from tapping your toes or jiggling your leg. Dont cross your arms- it can seem standoffish- but try squeezing your elbows to your sides or focusing on keeping your shoulders down and back, Sullivan says. If you really cant help but fidget, try to do it subtly. Take out a notebook and pen as though youre going to take notes during the interview- even if youre not- so that you can squeeze the pen instead of tapping your fingers. 8. Youre too rehearsedProblem you want to sound like you know your stuff. Bigger problem you practice so much that you sound like a robot. HR managers want to get to know you, not the version of yourself that you think they want to hear. Buzzwords are fine and all, but without a personality and a human to go behind them, they just sound mindless and insincere. The human brain is wired for narratives. Learn how to tell your sto ry.Contrary to what you might think, jargon doesnt make you sound authoritative- it makes you sound like you read a few too many articles on the latest hot topic in your field. It adds nothing to the conversation to tell the interviewer that you 10-Xd results and maximized synergies between stakeholders, Sullivan says. If you really cant come up with an answer to the question, say so. By having the confidence to admit that you dont know something off the top of your head, then suggesting a solution, you prove that youre flexible and that youre comfortable enough with yourself and your skills to admit when you dont know something.8 job interview mistakes smart people never makeWe all know the first-date-like jitters that go with a job interview the more excited you are for the opportunity, the more anxiety you might experience before showing up. Careers in Corporate Treasury
Careers in Corporate TreasuryCareers in Corporate TreasuryCorporate treasury manages a companys cash flow in the most efficient and profitable way possible. The field also involves forecasting future needs for funding and seeking the best alternatives for obtaining that funding. The head of a corporate treasury department typically holds the title of corporate treasurer and reports to the companys CFO. Education A bachelors degree can be sufficient to get your foot in the door and qualify for a junior position, but a masters degree in business administration is increasingly required for more senior positions in corporate treasury. Certification The need for formal certifications can vary by employer and by position. In some cases and with some companies, you may need either a CPA or a CFA. Even if its bedrngnis required, having one can make you a much more desirable candidate.Several other more specialized designations, such as CTP or CIA, also may be in demand for certain po sitions and by certain employers. Duties and Responsibilities Cash managers are a subcategory of corporate treasury personnel who focus on balancing incoming payments from customers with outgoing payments to suppliers and for taxes. Cash managers also seek appropriate investment opportunities for any excess cash that accrues, normally in short-term debt or bank deposits. This gives the field an aspect of money management. Corporate treasury also has many similarities to investment banking because it involves monitoring and forecasting the companys needs for outside funding, both long-term and short-term. This may involve utilizing bank loans, commercial paper, bond issues, and stock issues to meet these needs for cash. Corporate treasury personnel typically work in close concert with outside investment bankers. Typical Schedule There is a great deal of variation in the schedules of corporate treasury personnel depending on the exact position an individual holds, the company, and how deeply it has staffed the function. That said, work weeks of 50 to 60 hours are not unusual, often taking place in fast-paced work environments that require adapting to frequent last-minute contingencies. Whats to Like A career in corporate treasury can be highly paid, exciting and stimulating work. Its affinities with money management and investment banking add to its variety and intellectual interest and can offer openings to these fields. Whats Not to Like In some cases, especially during periods of economic difficulty when a company is under financial stress, corporate treasury personnel can be under enormous pressure. And if youre not fond of putting in long hours or youre not particularly adept at thinking on your feet, this might not be the right career for you. Salary Range Salariesdepend significantly on the corporate treasury role you play, as well as on the company. The bigger the company, the more the job entails, so these positions typically pay mor e. The median average salary for a cash manager is a little more than $87,000 as of 2017, ranging from about $67,000 to $101,000 annually. Corporate treasurers make more, typically in the six-figure range with a median annual salary of almost $191,000, but again, this depends heavily on the corporation or company in question.
